Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
230 AM PDT Mon Apr 7 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Fair warm weather will prevail this week. Patchy low clouds and
locally dense fog should return to the immediate coast by Monday
morning and likely again Monday night and Tuesday morning. There
will be some gusty winds for the high deserts and mountain
passes/canyons later today and tomorrow. Inland highs will be 10
to locally 20 degrees above normal Wednesday through Friday.
Cooler weather will return next weekend.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
Today through tonight...
A positively-tilted ridge will continue to transition over the
region, with mostly clear skies and the return of the onshore flow.
Currently there are some low level clouds over the coastal waters
and this could move into portions of the coastal areas, mainly
southern San Diego County, through the early morning hours. There
could also be some areas of patchy fog over the waters, although
there was not enough confidence of this to be widespread enough to
warrant the issuance of a Marine Weather Statement. Nevertheless,
boaters should be aware of this if venturing out into the near-
coastal waters of the Socal Bight. There could also be some patchy
areas of fog where the marine layer intersects the coastal hills and
within some of the valleys, otherwise most areas should remain
mostly clear with only some high level clouds passing by. There will
be some stronger gusty westerly winds picking up by later in the day
across the high deserts and also the the mountain passes/canyons and
areas prone to gusty winds. High temperatures will be warmer than
yesterday, and getting up into the lower 80s within the Inland
Empire, and low 90s for the Coachella Valley.
Tomorrow through next weekend...
The ridge is going to flatten slightly and propagate eastward,
although remain in place over the western states. At the surface,
the onshore flow will become predominant during the afternoon hours.
Stronger gusty winds will be possible yet again tomorrow for the
same areas and the southwesterly mid-level flow remains in place.
This will allow for a push of low-level moisture coming in off of
the Pacific to set up even a higher probability of the marine layer
returning for tomorrow night with patchy fog becoming possible again
over the coastal waters and extending into portions of the inland
valleys into the early morning hours on Wednesday.
As the ridge begins to become even more amplified by later in the
week, highs temperatures will continue on an upward trend with many
locations being well above the seasonal average for this time of
year, with Thursday and Friday being the warmest. There could also
be some 100+ max temperatures within the Coachella Valley for either
of these days. For the coastal and inland areas, model guidance
indicates that the marine layer will likely persist during the
overnight through early morning hours throughout the rest of the
week.
By the weekend, ensembles do indicate that there will be a breaking
down of the ridge and more troughing. The deterministic models do
diverge more at this period in the forecast, with the GFS20 showing
a possible open-wave shortwave moving over the region, whereas the
Canadian and ECMWF have this feature much further upstream over
Pacific well to the southwest of Socal around the same time. Either
way, there looks to be a cooldown taking place from this point on as
lower heights move in over the region, with temperatures
returning closer to the seasonal average by Sunday.
